Sandra P. Del Sesto, M. Ed., CPSS

Sandra P. Del Sesto, M. Ed., CPSS is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Initiatives for Human Development. As a certified prevention specialist, she provides training, community and strategic planning, program development and capacity building in the area of prevention both locally and nationally. She has also developed curriculum and programs for high-risk youth and families. Sandra is also the co-founder and administrator of the Rhode Island Teen Institute and the co-developer of a CSAP Exemplary Program targeting low literacy immigrant parents. She received her B.A. from Boston College (Newton) and her M.Ed. from Rhode Island College. She also has completed the certificate program in non-profit management at Brown University. She is a trainer for the Northeast Center for the Application of Prevention Technology and is a member of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium as well as several other non-profit boards and committees in RI related to her work in prevention.

Rosalind Kurzer, Co-Founder of IHD rkurzer@ihdri.org
Rosalind Kurzer, Co-Founder of IHD, serves as its Program Manager. She has been working in prevention for 30 years and, during that time, has developed K-12 substance abuse curriculum, prevention programs for high risk youth and senior citizens, and numerous trainings in health and life skills. For the past 8 years, Rosalind has been developing and expanding a program she designed for immigrant parents with a limited proficiency in English and sometimes their own language. The program, Parents Are Teachers, was named an Exemplary Program by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention in 2000 and is now in at least five sites in RI utilizing past participants as instructors and team leaders. When not working on PAT, Rosalind can be found practicing yoga, exercising, reading or traveling the world.

Marie Waldeck, Deputy Director mwaldeck@ihdri.org
Marie Waldeck, Deputy Director, is also the Chief Financial Officer and Project Supervisor at IHD. Marie has been with the agency for 20 years serving in a variety of capacities over time and assisting with its growth and development as a statewide agency. She has a degree in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services and completed the certificate program in non-profit management at Brown University as well as many other courses in the field. Marie is also the Coordinator of the Scituate Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force and has served in this capacity since its inception. When not at IHD, Marie can be found with her children and grandchildren on a beach or at Disneyworld.

Nancy Arnold Devaney, Project Coordinator ndevaney@ihdri.org
Nancy Arnold Devaney, Project Coordinator, has been the coordinator of the Narragansett Youth Task Force for the Prevention of Substance Abuse (NYTF) for eight years. She represents all the municipal substance abuse coalitions on RI’s Youth Development Advisory Committee; chairs the Public Education Sub-Committee of the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws State Grant, and is the Vice Chairman of the Rhode Island Prevention Alliance. Nancy is also employed by the University of Rhode Island as their community consultant for their NIAAA grant, Common Ground, and participates in the Narragansett-URI Coalition. In her spare time Nancy is an elected member of the Narragansett School Committee. She has four children ranging from 16 to 23 years old.

Jessica Lopes, Assistant Project Coordinator jlopes@ihdri.org
Jessica Lopes, Executive Administrative Assistant, has worked with IHD for 8 years in various capacities. She started as a participant in our Teen Institute Program and has progressed through the program becoming first a member of the youth staff and then an adult staff leader. She is also currently a full time student at Springfield College completing her Bachelor’s degree in Human Services.

Maureen Mulligan, Director of Youth Programs riti@ihdri.org
Maureen Mulligan, Director of Youth Programs, has been with the agency since 1993 serving as the coordinator of the high school and middle school Rhode Island Teen Institutes. She received a masters degree in Counseling from Rhode Island College and served on the Board of Directors of the Association National Teen Institutes.

Betina Vera, Assistant Coordinator bvera@ihdri.org
Betina Vera, Assistant Coordinator, started with IHD as a participant in our parenting program, Parents Are Teachers. She soon became one of PAT’s first Team Leaders working directly with immigrant’s families. Two years later she became a PAT Facilitator teaching the program in English and Spanish and coordinating program logistics. Betina has three children and is very active in her community as well as member of many different boards. She attended the University of Lomas de Zamora in her native country, Argentina.
