Training and Planning Services
Consistent with its philosophy, all services provided by Initiatives for Human Development are designed to increase the capacity of our clients to do their work more efficiently, more effectively and more creatively. Below is a partial list of services that are regularly provided to organizations, agencies and other groups with outstanding results.
Capacity Building
Initiatives for Human Development’s primary mission is to build the capacity of organizations, businesses and communities to do what they do effectively, efficiently and energetically. Capacity Building includes team building but it is far more than that. In this new century organizations and businesses must think creatively and “out of the box” to stay ahead of the rapid movement of our culture. IHD has an established reputation of helping community groups and organizations stay on top of the current trends through workforce and organizational development, creative problem-solving and planning.

Needs Assessments
IHD is equipped to conduct needs assessments for any organization or purpose. We will work with you to determine your assessment objectives and then the best tools to meet these objectives. IHD staff is experienced in conducting focus groups and key informant interviews, designing and conducting surveys, as well as analyzing the results of these activities. We are also skilled at identifying, collecting and analyzing quantitative data. The end product for you will be a useable and informative assessment that will assist you in your long-term and strategic planning. In the past few years IHD has conducted over 35 needs assessments for various community agencies and businesses.

Grant Writing
Grant writing is both a learnable skill and an art form. Our agency has successfully acquired funds through grants, which are the basis of our funding. Participants in our grant writing workshops learn about all the elements of grant writing, including helpful hints to maximize success. Some of the topics covered are writing a compelling needs statement, developing and describing your program or project, designing a sound evaluation methodology, creating responsibility charts, and preparing a sound budget. You will leave ready to prepare your first or next grant with confidence!

Meeting Facilitation
IHD staff are regularly called upon to serve as meeting facilitators both nationally and locally. We are equipped to facilitate your meetings or planning sessions and guarantee maximum outcomes in the shortest time possible. Examples of past groups include community councils, ad hoc committees, etc. Let us help you organize your agenda as well as your meetings.

Conference Planning
IHD can serve as your next conference planners for events as short as a morning workshop or as extensive as a week-long symposium. We can assist with conference agenda development, marketing, implementation and evaluation. All your logistics from site location and arrangements to registration of workshops and consultant contracts can be efficiently handled for your convenience.

Prevention Specialist Training
IHD staff is qualified nationally to conduct trainings in aspects of prevention: cultural competence, prevention theory, program planning, the Strategic Planning Framework, evaluation and logic models, human development, ethics, fiscal planning, and prevention strategies. All trainings are based on the most current rubrics in prevention and are experiential and participatory to ensure that participants will be prepared to work competently in the field. All trainings and workshops are tailored to prepare participants for prevention certification.

Leadership Development
Not everyone is born a leader; rather leadership is a skill that can also be developed. IHD can help persons new to management positions to become effective in their roles as agency or organizational leaders. Some of our leadership workshop topics are: identifying your leadership style; utilizing the three modes of governance (fiduciary, strategic and generative); supervision, mentoring and coaching; orientating new and retain good staff; conflict resolution and mediation strategies.

Life Skills Training
IHD provides interactive, audience-specific trainings in all areas of life skills, including but not limited to, conflict resolution and mediation, decision making and problem solving, stress and coping skills, assertiveness, and communication. Our audiences have included school staff, parents, youth, and business and agency groups. Training can be in a series or a single event based on the need. Participants leave these training with skills they can immediately apply to their daily live and the confidence to implement them.

Personal Styles
IHD is the only agency certified by New Directions, Inc. to serve as a national trainer for their materials on personal, leadership and parenting styles. Discovering the Best in You is based on psychologist Carl Jung’s work on personality and is our most popular training offering. Agencies, businesses, parents and other groups tell us that this workshop has been a “life changer” for them, affirming their individual or organizational strengths and problem areas and proving them with new insights and concrete, workable strategies for improved communication and self development. Sessions are highly interactive and participants leave with a better understanding and appreciation of themselves and others. What’s your COLOR? After this workshop experience, you will never forget!

Strategic Planning
IHD has assisted nearly 100 agencies, businesses and community groups in all aspects of strategic planning. We use a collaborative approach with our clients resulting in a plan that is not only specific, attainable and relevant but also creative and embraced by all related parties. “If you don’t know where you’re going, said the caterpillar to Alice, “any road will get you there.” We can assist you in finding the right road that leads to where you want to go.

Youth Development
IHD has been identified as an expert in the field of youth development for over 20 years. Our staff can provide training not only for youth 12-20 but also for the groups whose mission is to work with youth. Don’t expect a didactic training full of facts and figures. Your trainers will be both adult and youth staff of any ethnicity, socio-economic group, gender, and locale. All are skilled in their work and passionate about the potential of youth to make positive change in our world. It may change how you perceive young people and what they can do.

Gang Intervention
IHD staff are trained as Prevention Gang Specialists on issues such as gang prevention, intervention, community responsibility and more. Upon completion of these workshops, participants will be able to answer questions, such as who joins gangs, why youth join gangs, what are the risk factors for gang involvement, how teachers and youth workers can effectively engage with gang-related students, and what some of the common myths about gangs are. Get the information and the skills you need to address this volatile issue.

Programs for Seniors
Prevention programs for senior citizens have been overlooked by many agencies but not at IHD. Developed by seniors, "Coming of Age" is a series of interactive workshops that address those issues of most interest to women and men "coming of age" in their maturing years. Participants have fun and expand their skills as they tackle topics such as living with sadness and joy, developing and dealing with relationships in the later years, planning for wellness, and nurturing ourselves. A testimony to the relevance of the program is that attendance typically increases rather that decreases over the course of the program. As the late Betty Freidan said, "We need to break through this mystique of age. It's simply a new period of life." There is always room to grow, learn and celebrate who and where we are.
